I’ve been working at Fen-Bay for 14 months now but I have been in the same industry for 30 years.
I wanted to work at FBS to further enhance myself and my skills. I also wanted the opportunity to apply my experience in a larger company that could provide me with more opportunities.
When I first started I was a Technical Surveyor and now work in Field Project Operations and get the opportunity to project manage.
A normal day for me is to attend various sites across the mainland UK for technical surveys on products from automatic gates, traffic barriers, fencing to industrial roller shutters, high speed doors, sectional overhead doors, fire shutters and writing up a scope to delivery that product for the install teams.
It is a must to have a great knowledge of our products to do my job. Also good communication skills are essential when speaking with customers or potential clients on site.
To-date getting recognised from senior management of the ability to deliver an installation and going the bit extra to help the department move forward.
There is a lot of travel involved with my role so be prepared for that. A good work ethic is also vital as well as a good understanding of the industry. Be enthusiastic and passionate about what you do and of course be a team player.
The training opportunities I have had have been incredible. Since joining I have had access to various industry training days including:
All passed and certified.
My main duties are to carry out technical surveys, check costing sheets to make sure we maintain an healthy margin, liaise with our install coordinators on upcoming jobs, oversee site works and ensure we deliver in the fixed time frame. On larger installs I produce POWs and liaise with the contractor directly and report to head of departments on a monthly basis.
Yes, absolutely. The opportunity for growth and development within the company are clear and I for one am looking forward to the further opportunities.
Currently I am working on a project to deliver 14no Mavi-pass doors. Since taking on this project I have kept the customer informed of all updates from me being on site to installation dates and have also created a program of works. Clear communication is key so the customer is always aware of how the project is going at any given time. I’ve even been able to bring the start date forward a week which was greatly appreciated by the client.
I’ve also surveyed and delivered new roller shutters to various sites around the UK. These were all delivered on time with improved profit margins resulting in the customer confidence in FBS and ordering shutters again. This project also included the removal of the old shutters from each site, working to strict time frames.
To unwind after a busy day, I have recently taken up running which works great for me as I work away from home often. It really helps me to clear my mind and keep me energised physically and mentally. When I am at home I am part of the admin team of a local road cycling club with some 300+ members and arrange rides for all members that attend (not all 300) mainly on weekends with some rides taking place during the week as well. The social aspect is great which make it so enjoyable.
